My Mastering Equipment

I use various high quality analog hardware and software for my audio Mastering process. A good combination of both worlds is necessary to get the best results. Almost every peace of harware is modified to get the best sound out of it.

dbx 160SL

The SL is a great 2-buss or mix buss as it can glue and punch real well.

It’s built around their proprietary V8 VCA modules and has big Jensen transformer-balanced inputs & outputs capable of levels up to +30 dBu. Very fast compressor with beautifull 3D sound.

SPL Qure

The EQ was upgraded with Lundahl input- and out transformers and let the sound shine bright. It is a very colored eq with different parts for every band and the q circuit.

Behringer Combinator MDX 8000

Nice analog multi‑band compressor designed for jobs like mastering or full‑mix processingIt's also a flexible piece of equipment that can be used for subtle (and not‑so‑subtle) spectral reshaping, making it a valuable creative tool.

ART VLA II

The unit was modified to get a faster grab on Attack & Release, a better output stage and high qualtiy Tubes for a nice colored saturation. Low ESR Panasonic elcos in the output stage. General Electic Tubes. Lundahl transformers and better optokopler. Even the big Manley aluminium knobs were upgraded.

RME ADI-2

Super clean and transparent A/D D/A converter + Headphone amp. Powersupply will be upgraded soon for even better sound qualtiy.

In the digital world I prefer UAD plug-ins:

Ampex ATR-102 Mastering Tape Recorder

Cambridge EQ

Manley Massive Passive EQ

BAX EQ

Chandler Curve Bender EQ

Manley Vari-Mu

Shadowhills Mastering Compressor

Fairchild

Chandler Limited Zener

Monitoring: Pilot CD400 MK II, Yamaha HSM80(modified), Panatone

For the Future: Just building my Mastering Pultec the PQD2 and a GSSL VCA Compressor with turbo option. Next coming up is the Net EQ from Barry Porter (R.I.P.). Outstanding Mastering equalizer with a beautifull transparent sound. Also thinking about a versatile Vari-Mu compressor, Varis, Islander, Dictator, Tubecore or a diy VK1 would be an option. I really love the Dry Mix knob on the Islander and Tubcore, which makes the compressor working in parallel mode. Hopefully I can try out everything and take the right decission 😄. Also some new speakers, Focal, Adam or B&W with new Sabre E9038 DAC will be ordered.
